Topic “Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp”

A big, hometown Campus Pride thank you: Charleston's Alliance for Full Acceptance and Charlotte's Scorpio

One of the many ways we support student leaders is through our various leadership workshops, conferences and seminars, including our recent Campus Pride and Human Rights Campaign Carolinas Young Adult Leadership Summit in Charlotte and our upcoming Camp Pride 2012 Summer Leadership Program. Both are phenomenal annual programs for LGBT and ally students.

But the work we do isn't possible without the generous support of the many people, organizations and businesses that pull together to help Campus Pride achieve its mission in supporting and developing LGBT and ally student leaders and safer, more inclusive college and university campuses.

Campus Pride sends a big, hearty Carolina thank you to the Charleston, S.C.-based Alliance for Full Acceptance and to the Charlotte-based Scorpio nightclub. Both have supported our work in tremendous ways -- AFFA provides grants so that students in the Carolinas and Georgia can attend our Camp Pride for free, and Scorpio's recent fundraiser for us the weekend of our Carolinas Young Adult Leadership Summit supports our efforts here in our hometown.

Thank you AFFA. Thank you Scorpio. Your generosity is appreciated!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa native Zach Wahls, whose speech on his state house’s floor on behalf of his mothers and marriage equality inspired millions, will speak as a guest keynote and receive an honorary Voice & Action National Leadership Award at Camp Pride (www.campuspride.org/camppride/), the national summer leadership program for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight ally student leaders held July 17-22, 2012, at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University.

Wahls’ Jan. 31, 2011, speech in front of the Iowa House Judiciary Committee went viral on YouTube and other social media outlets in the days after he took a stand in his state’s debate on marriage. Soon after, TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres invited Wahls on her show to discuss his speech and his family’s story. Since then, Wahls has spent countless hours advocating for his family and other LGBT-led families and their fight to receive equal marriage rights across the U.S. His book, “My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength, and What Makes a Family” (Gotham Books), is due to be released on April 26, 2012.

“Zach’s amazing conviction in standing up for the rights of his family has been an inspiration to LGBT young people, families and straight allies across this nation,” said Campus Pride Executive Director Shane Windmeyer. “At a time when the national debate on marriage equality for same-sex couples continues to be used as a political football, Zach’s simple message of love, honor and commitment reminds each of us what a family is really about and acts to empower young people across the nation to stand up for what they believe is right and true.”

The Voice & Action National Leadership Award will be presented to Wahls on the final evening of Camp Pride. Wahls will be joined at the camp by other national speakers and entertainers. Past honorary award winners have included Neil Giuliano, Donna Rose, Mara Keisling, Judy Shepard and Daniel Hernandez, Jr. The award is the only honor of its kind, focused on the work of undergraduate college students who are creating positive change for LGBT and ally people on their campuses and in their communities. Campus Pride honored three other students with the award this year, including University of California, Berkeley’s Marco Flores, New York University’s Tovah Leibowitz and Duke University’s Jacob Tobia.

Midnight Tonight: Students Protest LGBT Campus Safety at University of Rhode Island

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students stand united and demand campus administrators enact inclusive safety and climate measures

KINGSTON, R.I. – Student leaders with the University of Rhode Island’s GLBT Center and Gay-Straight Alliance will participate in a nonviolent, direct action protest to demand University administration take immediate steps to ensure the safety and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, faculty and staff.

Tonight at 12:01 a.m., University of Rhode Island students will occupy the 24-hour room in the University Library and are vigilant in remaining there until their requests for LGBT institutional support are met by college administrators.

On-campus harassment in learning spaces, common areas, residence halls and elsewhere is among several issues being protested by the students. They allege that some staff and students who have spoken out against the harassment have been intimidated into submission by the University administration.

“We have had students throwing used condoms into students’ rooms, drawing offensive images on people’s doors, and an 330RiURI_1.jpgepidemic of people yelling ‘faggots’ as they drive by the GLBT Center,” says Brian Stack, a junior and protest organizer, whose concerns are echoed by other students.

Says sophomore Justin Willner, a staff member at the GLBT Center: “The atmosphere on the Kingston campus makes it clear I am second rate and my wellbeing is not valued.”

Student leaders representing the LGBT community have met with University administrators, including Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Dougan, to discuss and implement solutions. Despite having ample time to do so, there has been little concrete progress to ensure the safety and equality of LGBT students, faulty and staff, and Dougan admits he has failed the LGBT community.

Among the students' demands are a new GLBT Center to replace the inadequate and unsafe facility currently housed in a freshman residence hall. Students also say they want an increased budget for LGBT programming – the GLBT Center finds itself understaffed, undercompensated, and without the resources needed to serve its growing community or offer workplace and sensitivity training for faculty, staff, and students.

The students’ direct action protest is peaceful and nonviolent. At all times, a door will be left open for access in and out of the room. Members of the University community, family members and the press are invited to join in the protest. Student organizers encourage other students, faculty and staff to skip their classes in protest and join them in the 24-hour room until the college administration addresses the protest concerns.

Note: One of the protest organizers Brian Stack is a graduate of the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp. The camp was held this past July on the campus of Vanderbilt University. http://www.campuspride.org/camp.asp

Shout outs for Camp

Campus Pride's 2010 Summer Leadership Camp (which was fabulously phenomenal, by the way) got some great shout outs from Nashville's Out and About Newspaper and 365Gay.com columnist John Corvino. We thought we'd share...

National group hold summer leadership camp in Nashville
by Joe Morris, Out and About Newspaper, Aug. 1, 2010

In an effort to get into areas of the country where GLBT students face more issues, the Campus Pride organization held its summer leadership camp at

Vanderbilt University in late July.

Campus Pride works with student leaders and campus groups to create a safer college environment for GLBT students. Its nationwide volunteer network helps to develop resources, programs and services on campuses across the country, and its summer leadership camp plays a major role in that effort, says Shane Windmeyer, one the group’s cofounders and its executive director. 365gaydotcom.jpgCorvino: What I learned at gay leadership camp
By John Corvino, 365gay.com, July 30, 2010

"Remind me, dear,” I said to my partner Mark on the way to the airport, “what I am absolutely, positively not doing again next year?”

“You are not doing Camp next year,” he dutifully replied.

We had repeated this dialogue many times in the weeks leading up to Campus Pride’s annual Leadership Camp, a week of intense workshops and other activities for LGBTQ and allied college students, which was held this year at Vanderbilt University July 20-25. Read the rest at 365gay.com...

Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp Kicks Off at Vanderbilt University

Fourth Annual Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp Kicks Off at Vanderbilt University for LGBT and Ally Students this week July 20-25
Nearly 60 LGBT and ally college students from across the country; Campus Pride Organizes Leaders for Grassroots Change at Colleges & Universities

(Nashville, TN) -- Campus Pride kicks off the fourth annual summer leadership camp for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and ally college students from colleges and universities across the country. The camp begins July 20 to 25, 2010 and will be hosted for the first time on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

Though summer is often a slow time of year for student organizers working for LGBT equality, today nearly sixty LGBT and ally college student leaders from all over the country came together for a week of planning, networking and training. Touted as the “only camp of its kind for LGBT advocacy and social justice,” the five-day camp experience blends traditional camp activities like arts and crafts with a core curriculum of skill building in leadership development, social justice and civic involvement. The camp mission is straightforward: “At the heart of a remarkable leader is a passion and a vision for change.” Camp training and activities underscore the camp mission and engage campers to explore the unique challenges faced as LGBT and ally campus leaders.

Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride and author of The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students profiling the “100 Best LGBT-Friendly Campuses,” stated “It is our responsibility to build the future leaders who will continue the fight for equality at home, at work, at places of worship, at all levels of community. Those future leaders are on our college campuses today. The camp makes an investment for the future and will play a key role in training the next generation of leaders in the movement for LGBT rights.”
